Armenia is a landlocked country located in the southern Transcaucasus where Asia meets Europe. It is bordered by Turkey to the west, Iran to the south, Georgia to the north, and Azerbaijan to the east. The area is 29,800 square kilometers.

 

On April 6, 1992, Chinese government representative Wang Ningqing and Armenian Foreign Minister Ovanisian signed the communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Asia in Yerevan, and the two countries will establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level from now on. In July of the same year, China established an embassy in Armenia. After the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral relations have developed smoothly.

 

In June 2012, Procurator-General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate Cao Jianming and Vice-President of the Supreme People's Court Jiang Bixin visited Asia respectively. In September, Manu Kyan, chairman of the Asian People's Court, visited China, and Wang Gang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, met with him. In October, State Councilor Meng Jianzhu met with Baghdad Saryan, Secretary of the Asian National Security Council, who was in China to attend multilateral activities.

 

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Asia, economic and trade cooperation has continued to develop. According to the statistics of China Customs, in 2012, the bilateral trade volume between Central Asia was 150 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 12.9%, of which China's export value was 110 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 16.6%, and its import value was 40 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 1.5%.

 

In 2014, the trade volume of Central Asia reached US$292 million, a year-on-year increase of 51.2%. Among them, China's exports were US$123 million, a year-on-year increase of 2.5%, and China's imports were US$169 million, a year-on-year increase of 131%. In 1999, the two sides held the first meeting of the Central Asia Economic and Trade Cooperation Committee, and the seventh meeting in 2013.

 

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Armenia have carried out cultural exchanges and cooperation. In 1998, 2009 and 2012, China held "Chinese Culture Days" in Asia. In 1997, 2007 and 2011, the Armenian side held "Armenian Culture Day" activities in China. In 2004, China sent scholarship students to Asia for the first time and continued to accept Asian students to study in China. On March 7, 2008, the two sides of Central Asia signed an agreement on the cooperative construction of the educational and cultural center of the Confucius Institute at Yerevan State Linguistic University "Bryusov". On February 26, 2009, the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute jointly established by Brusov State Linguistic University in Yerevan, Armenia and Shanxi University in China was held in Yerevan. In 2012, the two countries warmly celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and carried out a variety of activities. The two sides held a celebration reception and issued commemorative envelopes. The scale of exchange of students between the two countries has been further expanded. A number of Chinese art troupes visited Asia and held the "Silk Road" art exhibition in Asia.
